OVERALL JOB PURPOSE

To oversee the efficient management of the Rehabilitation Department and ensure high standard of rehabilitation services in the use of human/ financial resources, equipment and appliances. To provide leadership to the Therapies unit (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy plus Speech and Language Therapy) and Prosthetics and Orthotics unit commonly known as the Orthopaedic Workshop.

Appropriately oversee the patient management and reviews at the CoRSU Therapy clinics. Participate practically in Physiotherapy within the hospital expectations and limits of skills, knowledge and experience.

 

KEY RESULT AREAS (OUTPUTS)

  • Plans and budgets for the rehabilitation services provided annually.
  • Agreed number of therapy sessions set and achieved.
  • Patient needs for assistive devices (appliances). Assessed, evaluated, prescribed, fabricated and devices issued
  • Client rehabilitation needs, appliance prescriptions and status reports on progress provided.
  • Supervision and training of staff, caregivers, students, volunteers and visitors done in the department.
  • Agreed number of continuous medical education (CME) sessions for the Rehabilitation staff conducted.
  • Agreed numbers of condition specific rehabilitation protocols developed and/or updated.
  • monthly departmental meetings conducted.
  • Targeted information, education and communication (IEC) training program for patients, attendants and caregivers achieved.
  • Effective management of Therapy and P&O teams ensured
  • Targeted number of Physiotherapy sessions achieved.
  • Effective liaison made with other medical teams
  • Support provided for Information, Education and Communication (IEC) trainings

 

 

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Therapy services
  • Is responsible for all activities performed by physiotherapist, occupational therapist, clinical psychologist, physiotherapy assistant, speech and language therapist including staff roster, work plans, periodic reports and staff appraisals;
  • Is responsible for monitoring and evaluation of therapy services and reviewing their effectiveness;
  • Provides therapy to clients on a one-to-one basis, group or special setting based on their levels of function and severity of disability;
  • Evaluates and documents clients’ therapy needs and progress at regular intervals.
  • Evaluates, prescribes and fabricates assistive devices as required by the clients;
  • Trains and supervises staff, caregivers, students, volunteers and other visitors to the department;
  • Liaises with various disciplines and departments involved in the rehabilitative process of clients;
  • Initiates and coordinates the formulation of policies and standard operating procedures (protocols) for the provision of the rehabilitation services.
    1. Liaison with other medical teams
  • Provides liaison to the nutrition and medical teams (i.e. nutrition nurses, cook, and consultant) so as to reduce mal-nutrition in children with disability at CoRSU;
  • Work closely with the medical and nutrition teams on education of children with disability, their attendants/ care-givers and the community at large for prevention of under or mal-nutrition;
    1. Information, Education and Communication (IEC) trainings
  • Liaises with heads of department to mobilise for patients and attendants IEC trainings.
  • Participates and conducts rehabilitation review meetings with parents and or attendants; gives sound advice to parents/attendants concerning children’s education.
  • Participates in development, review of IEC training materials and IEC training reports.
  • Enhances and support children’s education, their life skills and emotional well-being and serves as a good role model for the children;
  • Participates in sports medicine related tasks, co - curricular and recreational activities for the children at the rehabilitation center.

Academic & Professional qualifications

Essential

Desirable

University Degree in Physiotherapy (PT.)

Good computer knowledge and documentation skills

A post graduate Diploma in Health Management or its equivalent is essential.

 

Knowledge of rehabilitation of people with disabilities especially children

Updated registration and annual practicing licence with Allied Health Professionals’ Council

Knowledge of Protocols and standards of Rehabilitation Services

Work experience & skills

6 years’ experience and at least three (3) as Therapy team Leader

Needs to be flexible and creative person

Excellent communication, presentation and social skills

 

Good leadership and management skills

 

Knowledge of English and at least two of these local languages

 

Analytical and organisational skills
