  1. Overall Job Purpose

To provide and monitor feedings to pediatric patients enrolled in NRP and carry out nutrition education for patients and caretakers. Participate in developing the hospital patients’ diet and work closely with the project management team to manage nutritional interventions for various conditions including donor reporting. Participate in the CP and dysphagia clinics as well as research and training.

 

  1. Duties & Responsibilities
  • Working closely with the medical team to provide diets for patients with a variety of disorders.
  • Guiding the nutrition cook on how to prepare the meals for patients of NRP (particularly the one-day admissions) and ensuring that there is no gap during periods of absence of the nutrition cook.
  • Closely working in a team, carries out daily reviews of the in-patients under the nutrition rehabilitation program (NRP) and takes note of the problems, challenges and comments in the patient’s nutrition form and patient’s feeding chart, and determines therapeutic diets.
  • Attend to a daily nutrition clinic at OPD and regular ward round for assessment of moderate/high risk malnourished patients.
  • Participate in the hospital CMEs, attends the Wednesday CP Clinic in Therapy unit to provide nutrition education to the caretakers/mothers of the children.
  • Participate in dysphagia clinics i.e. preparation, informing the patients, carrying out assessments and attending sessions with other dysphagia specialists
  • Prepares the cooking charts for the nutrition cook.
  • Documents and updates NRP patient information in file maker and Smile train express system Participates in at least two nutrition specific information, education and communication (IEC) training sessions per week, in the hostel.
  • Participates in at least one focus group discussion with the mothers of the children undergoing nutrition therapy in the hostel.
  • Developing patient information leaflets.
  • Works in a multi-disciplinary team.

 

  1. Academic & Professional qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Human Nutrition or Human Nutrition and Dietetics from a recognized institution.
  • Computer knowledge and documentation skills
  • Clinical Nutritionist Skills or Public Health nutritionist skills are desirable

 

  1. Work Experience, knowledge & skills
  • 3 years’ working experience
  • Good communication, presentation and social skills
  • Ability to document all nutrition activities in the department
  • Knowledge of English and at least two local (Ugandan) languages
  • Knowledge of rehabilitation of people with disabilities especially children
  • A Clear understanding of Disability and rehabilitation programmes, community dynamics, cultures and practices   
  • Patience, Flexibility and Creativity skills
