OVERALL JOB PURPOSE

To provide individualized patient care to diversity of patients to make significant difference in the lives of patients and their families.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

OPD ROLES

  • Receives new patients at triage, take and enter data in file maker, i.e. patients’ history, body weight, vital observations, height.
  • Translating for patients where need arise.
  • Dressing of wounds, removing fixators from patients, K-wires, using the aseptic technique.
  • Assisting doctors in the consultation rooms, ushering in patients.
  • Counselling and health educating patients and attendants.
  • Giving start treatments.
  • Directing patients where to go
  • Comply with the procedures, regulations, and rules in maintaining medical records.
  • Maintain the unit clean, tidy and free from infection by following infection control procedures and protocols.
  • Disinfect and scrub instruments, fold gauze, cotton wool and take drums to the autoclave.

THEATRE ROLES

  • Take charge of all patients in theatre.
  • Responsible for all instruments and equipment; take lead in the packing of all sets of instruments.
  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of the theatre equipment.
  • Disinfect, wash and send the instruments to the sterilisation room as well overseeing the activities in the Central Sterile Service Department (CSSD)
  • Monitor patients’ vitals in PACU and as per doctors’ instructions; and keep proper records.
  • Document patient care services methodically to enable continuity of care.
  • Always have up to date information on the condition of patients in your care.
  • Oversee the laying of theatres and instrument trolleys before and after surgery.
  • Liaise with the store administrator in ordering for theatre requirements. Pick drugs and consumables from the store administrator for distribution in the operating rooms.
  • Accountable for all the consumables used in his/her theatres.
  • Assist surgeons during surgery.
  • Ensure smooth running of theatre by demonstrating effective leadership and maintaining good staff morale.
  • Comply with the procedures, regulations and rules in maintaining medical records.
  • Give out drugs and other medicines on time as prescribed by doctor.
  • Carry out cleaning and disinfection of the theatre daily.
  • Lay the operating rooms ready to receive patients.
  • Prepare instrument trolleys
  • Receive patients from the ward at the transfer bay and cross check using a surgical check list.
  • Administer drugs / insert intravenous cannula when prescribed.
  • Keep with the patient until patient is ready for surgery.
  • Act as a circulating nurse during operation.
  • Prepare theatre for the next patient.

 

WARD ROLES

  • Receives new patients and allocate them beds.
  • Comply with the procedures, regulations and rules in maintaining medical records.
  • Monitor patients’ vitals regularly and as per doctors’ instructions; and keep proper records.
  • Prepare and do ward rounds with the doctor on duty and always have up to date information on the number and condition of patients in your care.
  • Monitor, give appropriate nursing care to patients and document properly/ professionally to enable continuity of care.
  • Give out drugs and other medicines on time as prescribed by doctor.
  • Dress wounds under aseptic technique.
  • Make beds for patients appropriately and always keep the ward clean and tidy.
  • Give bed baths to bed ridden patients.
  • Pick drugs from pharmacy and always keep proper accountability.
  • Collect clean linen from the laundry and record in the book for accountability.
  • Accountable to all patients and equipment on the ward; report anything out of the ordinary.
  • Give and receive both verbal and written reports at changing shifts.
  • Disinfect and wash instruments on weekends NOT to leave them in water to rust.
  • Follow disinfection and sterilisation procedures and always adhere to them.
  • Disinfect the dressing room before and after the routine wound cleaning procedures.
  • Attend and monitor patients admitted on nutrition program as required i.e. daily weighing, observe feeding, chart exactly what was taken, report etc.
  • Prepare patients and hand them over to theatre nurse and receive post operated patient from theatre staff; ALWAYS wait to GIVE and to RECEIVE report/instructions at the changing bay.
  • Give health education talks to patients and attendants.

 

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Identify patient care requirements by establishing rapport with the patient as well as his relatives.
  • Uphold patients’ dignity and confidentiality in all patient care operations.
  • Maintain cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information, responding to requests and participating in problem-solving methods.
  • To protect patients and employees by adhering to infection control policies and protocols.
  • Account for all the hospital equipment in the department and report any defects.
  • Request for the required items in the unit.
  • Supervise the activities of the Enrolled nurses in the unit.
  • Respond to any other duties assigned by immediate supervisor

Diploma in Nursing.

Registered with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC)

Training in health services management is an added advantage

Certificate in First Aid,
