OVERALL JOB PURPOSE

To provide individualized patient care to diversity of patients to make significant difference in the lives of patients and their families.

  • Available at work place to do patients/doctor’s rounds.
  • Good reception and comfort of patients.
  • No cross infection in the work place.
  • Infection control measures are in place.
  • Nursing procedures are done properly.
  • Patients’ information charts are done accurately.
  • Medication is given out as prescribed.

 

 

GENERAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Order and pick drugs from pharmacy and always keep proper accountability.
  • Ensure enough supplies for the unit by requesting for the required items. e.g. drugs, consumables, stationary etc.
  • Ensure there is enough clean linen on the unit with proper accountability.
  • Administer drugs on time as prescribed by doctor.
  • Insert intravenous cannula when prescribed.
  • Carry out nursing procedures.
  • Disinfect, wash and send the instruments to the sterilisation room.
  • Monitor patients’ vitals regularly and as per doctors’ instructions; and keep proper records.
  • Monitor, give appropriate nursing care to patients and document properly/ professionally to enable continuity of care.
  • Identify patient care requirements by establishing rapport with the patient as well as his relatives
  • Uphold patients’ dignity and confidentiality in all patient care operations.
  • Maintain cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information, responding to requests and participating in problem-solving methods.
  • Protect patients and employees from hospital acquired infections by adhering to infection control policies and protocols. (universal precautions)
  • Maintain cleanliness of work station while keeping it tidy and free from infection by following infection control procedures and protocols (Carry out cleaning and disinfection of the unit daily).
  • Account for all patients on the unit; report anything out of the ordinary.
  • Account for all the hospital equipment in the department and report any defects.
  • Comply with the procedures, regulations, and rules in maintaining medical records.
  • Dress wounds under aseptic techniques and disinfect the room after the dressing procedure.
  • Counselling and health educating patients and attendants.
  • Disinfect and scrub instruments, fold gauze, cotton wool and take drums to the autoclave.
  • Translating for patients where need arises.
  • Respond to any other duties assigned by immediate supervisor.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Theatre Nurse

  • Lay the operating rooms ready to receive patients.
  • Prepare instrument trolleys before surgery.
  • Receive patients from the ward at the transfer bay and cross check using a surgical check list.
  • Keep with the patient until patient is ready for surgery.
  • Assist the surgeon during the operation.
  • Act as a circulating nurse during operation.
  • Pick drugs and consumables from the store administrator for distribution in the operating rooms.  
  • Prepare theatre for the next patient.
  • Monitor patients’ vitals regularly and as per doctors’ instructions; and keep proper records until patient is stable

OPD Nurse

  • Receives new patients at triage, take and enter data in file maker, i.e. patients’ history, body weight, vital observations, height.
  • Write request forms for x-rays, haemoglobin level, for new patients and follow ups.
  • Dressing of wounds, removing fixators from patients, K-wires, using the aseptic technique.
  • Assisting doctors in the consultation rooms, ushering in patients.
  • Giving stat treatments.
  • Directing patients where to go after attending to doctor.

Ward Nurse

  • Receives new patients and allocate them beds.
  • Prepare and carry out ward rounds with the doctor on duty and always have up to date information on the number and condition of patients in your care.
  • Identify patient care requirements by establishing rapport with the patient as well as his relatives.
  • Prepare patients and hand them over to theatre nurse; and receive post operated patients from theatre staff; ALWAYS wait to GIVE and RECEIVE report at the changing bay.
  • Make beds for patients appropriately, disinfect them after discharge; and always keep the ward clean and tidy all the time.
  • Give bed bath to bed ridden patients.
  • Attend and monitor patients admitted on nutrition program as required i.e. daily weighing, observe feeding, chart exact amount taken, report etc.
  • Give and receive report both verbal and written reports at changing shifts.

Hostel Nurse

  • Receive new patients and allocate them beds.
  • Do rounds with the doctor on duty and always have up to date information on the number and condition of patients in your care.
  • Select patients and escort them to OPD or ward for review.
  • Bed making and maintain the hostel clean and tidy.
  • Attend and monitor patients admitted on nutrition program as required i.e. supervising feeds, charting the exact amount taken, daily weighing, etc.

Private ward Nurse

  • Do ward rounds with the doctor on duty and always have up to date information on the number and condition of patients in your care.
  • Monitor patients admitted on nutrition program as required.
  • Ensure proper hygiene of patients, equipment, and entire ward.
  • Carry out bed bath where appropriate.
  • Manage patients using the nursing process.
  • Always give a written and verbal report at the end of every shift.

 

NB: A person without the necessary qualifications can only be appointed in acting position.

ACADEMIC &PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Certificate of Enrolment in Nursing.

Registered with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (UNMC)

Good customer care especially when dealing with patients especially children with disability.

Certificate in First Aid

Good computer knowledge and skills
