Our story

Started in Uganda, for Uganda and its neighbours

CoRSU stands for Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services for People with Disability in Uganda. We are a specialised rehabilitation hospital, established in 2006 as a private, non-profit, non-governmental organisation.

CoRSU is a Ugandan initiative. It was encouraged and supported by Christian Blind Mission (CBM), with the main aim of expanding and improving comprehensive rehabilitation services for children with disability in Uganda and across the East Africa region. The hospital opened in 2009 at Kisubi, on Entebbe Road.

Over a period of 15 years, CoRSU has changed the lives of over 60,000 children through surgical services and rehabilitated over 100,000 patients through a variety of services and disciplines.

What guides us

Our mandate, vision and mission

Our mandate

Our mandate is to mitigate the debilitating effects of disabling physical conditions by ensuring accessibility and availability of quality preventative, curative and rehabilitative services for people with disability in Uganda and neighbouring countries.

Our vision

That people with disability in Uganda are able to access rehabilitation services that improve their quality of life, and that they are fully integrated in society.

Our mission

Our mission is to be a centre of excellence in Uganda, providing orthopaedic and plastic reconstructive surgery as well as comprehensive rehabilitation services for people with disabilities, prioritising children.

Core values

Six values behind every decision

These are the standards our staff hold themselves to, in theatre, on the wards, in therapy and in the community.

  • Patient focus

Every decision starts with the person in front of us and what will help them live more fully.

  • Integrated teamwork

Surgeons, nurses, therapists, technicians and community workers plan and deliver care together.

  • Respect and courtesy

We treat every patient, caregiver and colleague with dignity.

  • Open communication

We explain, we listen, and we keep patients and families informed at every step.

  • Transparency and accountability

We are answerable to our patients, our partners and the public for how we use resources.

  • Creativity and innovation

We look for better, more affordable ways to restore movement and function.

  • Values in practice

Hear from patients and families about their care at CoRSU.

Who we serve

People from all walks of life, without discrimination

We provide surgery and rehabilitation to patients of all ages, both children and adults. Children with physical impairment make up 80% of the people we serve.

What patients pay

Children aged 0 – 5
Treated free of charge
Children aged 6 – 17
Treated at a subsidised rate
Adults
Pay for their treatment, which helps fund care for children

A surgeon usually examines a patient before the cost of treatment or surgery is determined. Read our patient questions and answers.

Where patients come from

Patients come from all over Uganda and the East Africa region, including Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan. Most come with conditions such as bone deformities and bone infections, or need plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Rehabilitation after surgery

Our Rehabilitation Department offers physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, educational and play therapy, and psychosocial therapy. Our workshop makes and fits prostheses and orthoses.

A teaching hospital

CoRSU is an internship site for medical students from universities such as Mbarara and Busitema, and from universities in Europe, Canada and the United States of America.

Research

We collaborate with local and international institutions to carry out research studies that improve care for people with disability.
