Clinical placements and teaching partnerships

A placement site for students from Uganda and abroad.

The hospital is an internship site for medical students from universities such as Mbarara and Busitema, as well as universities from Europe, Canada and the United States of America. CoRSU also collaborates with local and international institutions on research studies.

According to the Annual Report 2023, these collaborations include internship placements, research collaborations, student exchange learning and exchange visits.

CoRSU's 2018 programme handbook describes the hospital as a training centre for students, residents and visiting surgeons. At that time it named the Master of Medicine residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery, run in affiliation with Mbarara University of Science and Technology, and elective placements for overseas therapy students.

Nurse training

Skilled nurses, better outcomes for patients.

CoRSU's commitment to improving the lives of people with disability extends beyond direct patient care. Nurses play a crucial role in providing high-quality, compassionate healthcare.

That is why we offer training programmes designed to equip nurses with the knowledge and skills to excel in caring for people with disability.

What the programmes cover

  • Disability awareness and sensitivity

A deep understanding of the particular needs of people with disability and the barriers they face.

  • Specialised care techniques

Specific conditions and considerations relevant to caring for people with disability.

  • Assistive technology and equipment

Using specialised equipment and technology to improve patient care and independence.

These programmes benefit nurses, and they lead to better outcomes for patients. By providing ongoing education and building a skilled nursing workforce, CoRSU is investing in a brighter future for people with disability across Uganda and neighbouring countries.

Surgical training and fellowships

Training the next generation of surgeons.

In addition to internships and short-term attachments, CoRSU provides opportunities for long-term training of health workers at a higher level. The hospital aims to establish a centre of excellence in paediatric orthopaedics training within the region.

As fellows learn at CoRSU, they also help to provide services to patients.
