Cerebral palsy services

Assessment, therapy, surgery and family support for children with cerebral palsy, through dedicated weekly clinics.

Overview

About cerebral palsy

Cerebral palsy is a group of conditions that affect movement, muscle tone and posture. It is caused by damage to the developing brain, before, during or soon after birth.

At CoRSU, children with cerebral palsy are cared for by a team that brings together paediatricians, orthopaedic surgeons, therapists and orthopaedic technicians. The paediatric unit runs a cerebral palsy clinic on Wednesdays and a cerebral palsy multidisciplinary clinic on Fridays.

Depending on the child’s needs, care can include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, orthopaedic surgery and assistive devices such as orthoses and wheelchairs.

A young boy sits in a supportive therapy chair with a tray, his feet in braces, in front of a painted blue wall.

Care for children with cerebral palsy can include

  • Assessment by a paediatrician
  • Physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • Speech and language therapy
  • Orthopaedic surgery where it will help
  • Orthoses, wheelchairs and other assistive devices
  • Counselling and support for families
