Referral partnerships

Most people reach CoRSU because someone noticed they needed specialised care and pointed the way. Community workers, health facilities and organisations across Uganda are part of every patient's route to treatment.

Who refers patients to us

  • Community mobilisers and village health teams

In 2024 CoRSU trained 290 community mobilisers and village health team members from 16 districts to recognise disability and refer people for care.

  • Hospitals and health centres

Health workers refer patients directly, and partner hospitals host our surgical camps. In 2024 fistula camps were held at St. Anthony Hospital in Tororo, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kitgum and Kyangwali Health Centre IV in Kikuube District.

  • Partner organisations

CoRSU has no other branch, so it works with partners across the country to mobilise and refer patients. Thirty partner organisations attended a joint meeting at the hospital in December 2024.

  • District health offices

Outreach for the fistula programme is planned with the District Health Officer in each district, with community mobilisers, some of them former patients, helping women travel to the hospital.

How to refer a patient

  1. 1

    Contact the hospital

Call customer care or email us with the patient’s age, where they live and a short description of the condition.

  2. 2

Send the patient with a referral letter

A referral letter and any earlier medical records or X-rays help our clinicians. Patients may also walk in during clinic hours.

  3. 3

    A specialist assesses the patient

The team examines the patient and agrees a plan with the family. The cost of any treatment is worked out after that assessment.

  4. 4

    Care continues at home

After treatment our community team follows patients up, and may ask the referring partner to help.

This is general guidance. CoRSU has not yet published a formal referral form or procedure; please call to confirm what is needed for your patient.
